Austerns is one of the premier antiques dealers in the world, specializing in the finest pieces of jewelry, antique dolls, art, accessories, and home furnishings. For more than three decades Austerns has provided customers with gorgeous, affordable items for gifts, for the home, and for you.
The business was founded in 1981 by Lynn Austern, a jeweler and interior designer. Lynn worked at Carvin French Jewelers throughout the 1970s and studied at the New York School of Interior Design. Stylistically, she was drawn to romantic aspects of the Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco movements, which helped form her love for antiques. Over those ten years, antiquing evolved from a hobby to a side job to a full-fledged business venture.
“I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950s and spent lots of time with my extended family. My great aunt Ann took me to the Brooklyn Museum, to the Botanical Gardens, and when I’d stay with her she’d show me all the beautiful things she had. I loved the stories behind the pieces, like the chipped Mary Gregory pitcher caused by her brother playing football in the apartment. She explained to me where each item came from and it was like a history lesson. Later, when I was decorating my own apartment, I realized that antiques were not only beautiful and different, but also the best value in terms of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Antiques became a way for me to express myself.”
Today, in addition to antiques, Austerns carries handmade, one of a kind, impeccably-chosen creations. Some of the new things that fit the Austerns look include wall art by Michal David Designs, jewelry by Jan Michaels, and Terra Traditions photo albums. Austerns studies trends, scouts the market, and uses its creativity to come up with the very best ways for you to give unique gifts, beautify your home, and personalize yourself.
Every item tells a story and those stories are what links our generation to the past. Yet, Austerns knows you can’t step back in time; Austerns invites you to be timeless.
